What is prehab?

Get ready for the road ahead!

Prehabilitation is all about preparing your body for a challenge. Athletes use prehab to prepare for sporting events, but research has shown that a prehabilitation programme improves outcomes and recovery from a range of medical procedures including knee replacements, hip replacements, heart operations and even cancer treatment! Participating in a physiotherapy programme before a procedure or medical treatment can;

- reduce postoperative pain

- improve physical function

- reduce post-operative complications

- decrease length of hospital stay

So what does it involve?

Prehabilitation involves targeted exercise to improve your function and fitness prior to a procedure or treatment. It really depends on what you're about to face, but some examples include

- weight loss

- breathing exercises to improve lung capacity

- strength training of important muscle groups

- exercises to improve circulation

- fitness training

Some research suggests that an ICU admission is akin to running multiple marathons, being as fit as possible helps to reduce the effects of muscle wasting during prolonged periods of bed rest.
