Finding the perfect gift is a challenge every year, especially for those people in our lives who aren’t able to get out as much as they once could. We want to make Christmas special for our older relatives, (mums, dads, Grandmas, Grandpas, aunties, uncles, great aunties, great uncles, the list goes on…) but it can be hard to find a truly special gift that they don’t already have.
Here’s our GM Physiotherapy list of unique gift ideas for older adults who deserve the best!
A fancy meal in: one of the best things about getting out is experiencing new restaurants and cuisines. Fortunately, we have access to so many options in our own home now. Why not create a special evening by ordering in something they haven’t tried before. If you have a higher budget, consider a home chef or cook to create food for them in their own home.
Music: my Great Aunt Jess used to love going to shows. Her favorite was ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. Unfortunately, despite making a big effort to get out to see it a couple of years ago, she had a seat at the back and couldn’t see the stage. Bringing the feeling of a glitzy show into the home is a sure way to make Christmas magical. Hiring a violinist or musician to come and play for someone at home supports the local economy and can be a great way to bring back memories of wonderful times. If you can’t afford a professional, ask around! There are lots of budding musicians in the community just waiting for the opportunity to show off!
Memoire: These can be extremely fulfilling for our older relatives, who feel they have information and stories that they want to pass down to future generations. My Aunt Jess uses Storyworth, who gives her a selection of questions each week and she simply emails her responses back, and at the end of the year her stories are bound into a beautiful book!
And now for the more functional gift ideas!
An all-terrain/ beach walker so that our family members can still join us on the beach at Christmas and whenever they want going forwards!
A reacher-grabber. I remember having great fun with these in primary school with my friends, but these simple devices can be fairly life changing when given to a family member with little to no mobility!
A fall pendant. These devices could save a life with their fall detection technology and built-in microphone/speaker. If your loved one was to fall far away from their phone, this could prevent them from lying on the ground for prolonged periods of time.
Physiotherapy: we had to get it in here! At GM Physiotherapy, we’re all about making movement fun. Stay away from clinics and enjoy your exercise more from the comfort of your own home. We also do physiotherapy in external locations all around the Gold Coast. Tell us where you want to go and we can make that happen!
